The History of Little Giant Ladders

Little Giant Ladder has been making articulating ladders for over 30 years.

Little Giant Ladder began when Hal Wing, a U.S. citizen who was living in Germany at the time, met a German engineer in the early 1970's who had developed an articulating ladder unlike any other he had ever seen before.

Most ladders at the time were either extension ladders or wooden a-frame ladders. The new kind of ladder allowed the ladder to transform into both an extension and an a-frame ladder.

And a revolution in ladders began.

Hal started Wing Enterprises and began importing the ladders to the United States from Germany. He travelled to various fairs and shows 300 days a year throughout the Nation and demonstrated the ladders in front of thousands of people a year.

At his first tradeshow, Hal demonstrated the ladder with no success. At the time, Sears was selling a standard ladder for a tenth of the price at the time so convincing people they should spend more on a ladder wasn't easy.

So the next day, Hal decided to put on a pair of leiderhosen and yodle on top of his Little Giant Ladder, harkening back to his days in Germany, to get attention. That day he sold three ladders and helped put Wing Enterprises on the map.

In time, Hal decided to manufacture the ladders in the United States. This came as a result of exchange rate fluctuations in 1972 making it increasingly difficult to affording importing the German Made ladders. He started fabricating the ladders under in his carport.

Originally, the ladder was primarily made of wood with some steel components. Eventually he started making it out of almost all aluminum; sourcing the best materials available. He also added functionality to the ladder like the 90 degree stair case ladder and scaffolding positions. He also added the ability to adjust the LIttle Giant to various heights.

As the company began to grow, Hal started introducing new ladders as well as accessories to help make his ladders even more appealing and versatile. Today, there are over dozen different ladder models and just as many accessories.

In addition to speciality ladders for Painters, Churches, and Electricians, Wing builds tactical ladders for the government's Armed Foces as well for the police. Today, his top selling ladder is the LIttle Giant Ladder System that you see aired on all the infomercials.

In the 1980's, the company almost went bankrupt due to a failed partnership. Not giving up, Hal was able to revive the company in 1986. In 2003, he began airing infomercials. Knowing how important it was to demonstrate the ladder to help sell it, airing infomericals seemed like a natural place to pitch his ladders.

According to Wing, revenue grew sixfold in 2004, 40 percent in 2005, and even today maintains revenues in the nine digits, thanks to the infomercial.

Wing runs a family business and trusts in his employees. To this day, several generations of Wings work at Wing Enterprises from the warehouse floor to the executive level. In fact, Hal's sons Art and Doug both hold key positions in the company.

Wing Enterprises continues to create innovative new ladders including the Little Giant Revolution Ladder and the BigTrex Ladder as well as great new Little Giant accessories like the Little Giant wheel kit and Little Giant Project Tray, to name a few.
